Lifting straps vs wrist wraps: how to tell them apart
Lifting straps and wrist wraps can look similar in product photos. The clearest difference is where the band goes. A lifting strap has a section that wraps around the bar. A wrist wrap fastens around the wrist and does not connect your hand to the bar.

The names can cause confusion too. Some shops use “wrist straps” for lifting straps. Check the full product construction rather than relying on a name or a close-up of the loop.
Lifting straps have a tail for the bar
SQUATRAT lifting straps combine a wrist loop with a long band. That band wraps around a bar or suitable handle. This construction is offered for pulling exercises; it is different from a wrap that stays around the wrist.
The free tail is the easiest feature to spot. In a flat product photograph, the long section belongs to the wrapping construction. After use, the connection to the bar is released.
Each SQUATRAT strap measures 60 × 4 cm when laid flat. You can choose cotton with neoprene padding, cotton with additional silicone grip print, or unpadded cowhide leather. Those material differences do not change the basic distinction between a lifting strap and a wrist wrap.
Wrist wraps stay around the wrist
A wrist wrap winds around the wrist. Common designs use an elastic band, a thumb loop to help position it and a hook-and-loop fastening. Their intended role is wrist support. They do not have a long wrapping tail for the bar.
A thumb loop can look similar to a small strap loop in a cropped photograph. Look at the rest of the item: the band stays around the wrist instead of wrapping around the equipment. Length, stiffness and materials vary between manufacturers and models.
SQUATRAT does not sell wrist wraps in the range described here. If you specifically want wrist wraps, our lifting straps are a different product, not an equivalent substitute.
The construction differences at a glance
| Question | Lifting straps | Wrist wraps |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the band sit? | At the wrist loop and around the bar | Around the wrist |
| Is there a tail for wrapping around equipment? | Yes, in the loop design described here | No |
| What defines the construction? | A band connecting the wrist loop to the equipment | A wrap that surrounds the wrist |
| What should you compare? | Material, wrist loop, padding and strap dimensions | The maker's information on length, material, stiffness and fastening |
| In the current SQUATRAT range? | Three constructions | None |
Padding does not turn a lifting strap into a wrist wrap. The neoprene on SQUATRAT cotton straps sits at the wrist loop. It is part of the strap, not a separate supporting wrap.
How to avoid buying the wrong product
Start with the construction you want. If you want a tail to wrap around the bar, compare lifting straps. If you want a band that stays around the wrist, look specifically for wrist wraps.
Next, inspect a complete product image. A close-up of a logo or loop may not reveal what the rest of the band does. Front, rear and laid-flat views make the distinction clearer.
Then read the instructions for the exact model. A lifting-strap wrapping method cannot simply be transferred to wrist wraps. Padding alone also does not establish a particular support function or training effect.
Choosing a SQUATRAT lifting strap
Once you have decided on a wrapping strap, choose the surface and padding arrangement you prefer. Plain cotton straps have neoprene wrist padding without silicone grip print. Cotton straps with silicone grip add silicone to the contact side. Cowhide leather straps have no additional padding.
Both cotton versions have a 15 cm padded section and 7 mm padding thickness. All three strap models measure 60 × 4 cm laid flat. The material comparison puts those features side by side.
Common questions
Does “wrist strap” always mean a wrist wrap? No. The term may be used for lifting straps. Check the construction and the maker's instructions.
Are padded lifting straps the same as wrist wraps? No. The padding sits at the wrist loop, while the strap still has a tail that wraps around the bar.
Do I need both? A product name or your training experience alone does not answer that. This guide explains the designs; it is not a blanket recommendation to buy both.
What should I do next? If you want a lifting strap, compare the three SQUATRAT models. If you want wrist wraps, look for a product designed for that purpose and read its instructions.
