Why Use Straps

Grip is the weak link.
Straps fix that.

Your grip is almost always the limiting factor before your back, legs, and hips are. On heavy deadlifts, shrugs, and rowing movements, your hands give out long before the target muscles reach failure — which means you're ending sets early and leaving gains on the table.

Lifting straps bypass your grip entirely. Wrap them around the bar, and the mechanical connection between the strap and your wrist takes over — letting you hold on as long as your muscles can pull.

This is especially valuable on high-rep sets, volume blocks, and any pulling movements where grip endurance is genuinely a separate limitation from the muscle group you're targeting.

What Makes Them Different

Details that matter on heavy pulls.

Size
One size fits all wrist sizes. The extended loop gives you plenty of strap to work with for multiple wraps and a secure lockdown on the bar regardless of hand size.
Grip, Unlocked
Cotton webbing grips the bar with enough friction to stay put, while remaining gentle enough against the skin to be worn set after set without chafing or irritation.

The Material

Why cotton webbing?

Cotton is the preferred strap material for most strength athletes for good reason: it softens with use, conforms to the wrist, and generates better bar friction than nylon without being abrasive against the skin.

Nylon straps are stiffer and tend to dig in under heavy loads. Cotton wraps naturally and distributes the load across the wrist more evenly — which matters when you're pulling 200+ kg and the strap is under serious tension.

SQUATRAT straps use heavy-duty cotton webbing — the same grade you'd find in industrial rigging applications — woven tight enough to resist any meaningful stretch under maximum lifting loads.

FAQ

Common questions.

Should I use straps for every pulling movement?
Not necessarily. For lower-weight sets where grip is not the limiting factor, training with bare hands builds grip strength over time. Use straps strategically — on top sets, heavy volume, or movements where you're genuinely grip-limited — to maximize the muscle work you're targeting.
Are these competition-legal?
Lifting straps are generally not permitted in powerlifting competition for the lifts being judged. They are training tools. Always check your federation's rules before competition.
How do I wrap the straps correctly?
Thread the strap through the loop to form a lasso around your wrist. Place the tail of the strap under the bar, then rotate the bar (or roll it) toward you to wind the strap around the bar. Grip the bar and the strap together — the tension of the lift will tighten the wrap automatically.
Cotton vs nylon straps — which is better?
Cotton softens with use, conforms to the wrist, and provides better bar friction without irritating the skin. Nylon is more rigid and more durable against abrasion but can dig in uncomfortably under load. Most experienced strength athletes prefer cotton for its feel and wrist comfort.
How do I care for the straps?
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry. Avoid high-heat drying which can cause shrinkage. Let them dry fully before your next session to maintain the integrity of the webbing.
